Rev. John Pennylegion – Pastor

Penny was born and raised in Burlington, ON Canada. He played baseball at Lander University in Greenwood, SC. It was there, during his junior year, that Penny heard the gospel and believed in Jesus. Following college he spent four years working in college ministry at Mitchell Road Presbyterian Church. During this time he met his wife Kat and they were married in 2003. Sensing a call to pastoral ministry, Penny and Kat moved to St. Louis where Penny graduated with an MDiv from Covenant Theological Seminary. After graduating in May 2009, Penny became the Associate Pastor at Covenant Presbyterian in St. Louis. In July 2016, Penny became the Pastor of CTK. Penny and Kat have two daughters, Laine and Mead, and a son, Cole.

Doug Eggleston – Interim Church AdministratorDoug Eggleston Headshot

Doug and his wife Mary became members of CTK in October, 2010. They were married in 1979 and have two grown children. Their son, Daniel, and his wife Amy live in Huntersville, NC, and their daughter Katie lives in Roanoke and is a member of CtK. Doug serves on the Session of CtK. He is a member of the Hunting Hills Community Group, serves on the Finance Committee, and assists with teaching adult Sunday school. He recently retired from a career in the banking and financial services industry, and is currently serving as the Interim Church Administrator at CTK.

Matthew Shaughnessy – Director of Youth MinistriesMatthew Shaughnessy Headshot

Matthew grew up just down the road in Lynchburg, VA, before attending Virginia Tech, from which he graduated in 2014 with a degree in Communications. He was married in July 2015 to the much-better-looking Kelsey Shaughnessy, a long-time friend from college. As a student at Tech, Matthew became closely involved with Campus Outreach and attended Grace Covenant PCA. At Grace, Matthew had the gracious opportunity to take part in a Fellows Program for college students interested in eventually working in ministry. After completing the fellows program, he served as the pastoral intern where he did a plethora of tasks, including teaching high school Sunday school, leading the toddler Sunday school, visiting members at the hospital with the pastors and much more. Matthew and Kelsey began attending Christ the King upon his hire in March of 2015. Matthew loves playing almost any sport, hiking, reading, playing board games and spending time outside.

Cathy Codington – Administrative AssistantCathy Codington Headshot

Cathy was born in Virginia, raised in California, and traveled to 45 of the 50 states in the U.S. and 15 other countries. Obviously, she likes to travel. She has pursued several different vocations over the years which include drafting for a civil engineering firm and a city planner in Richmond, substitute teaching at Faith Christian School, elder care and sales for Norwex. A mother of Josh (wife, Janna), Emily and John, and Nana of Josie, she loves to spend time with family and friends.  Cathy’s hobbies are quilting, painting with water colors, playing cards and board games, traveling and spending time at a beach, lake or river.

Suzanne Ely – Nursery CoordinatorSuzanne Ely Headshot

Suzanne was born and raised in Charlottesville, and moved to Roanoke after she and her husband, Matt, married in 2007. They had their daughter, Anne, in 2013, and their son, William, in 2016.  Suzanne is a 2005 graduate of James Madison University, with a bachelor’s degree in music education. She served as a nursery worker at Trinity Presbyterian Church from 1999-2007, and taught music for eight years before deciding to stay at home after the birth of her daughter. She enjoys playing French horn, spending time with her family, and reading. Suzanne joined Christ the King in May 2008.

Laura Griffith – Bookkeeper

Laura Griffith was born in West Virginia. As a young girl, she moved with her family to Salem Virginia and graduated from Glenvar High School. Her first job as a bookkeeper was for Prestige Limousine in 1995. Later that same year she went to work for Kyle Edgell, a well-known Laura GriffithRoanoke caricaturist. She was Kyle’s bookkeeper for nine years. Laura has also kept financial records for Grace Fellowship Church from 2003 to 2005 and later for Wellspring Presbyterian from 2007 to 2009.  In 2009, as a homeschool mom, she became director of Classical Conversations (“CC”) which had its own bookkeeping requirements. She served as treasurer for American Heritage Girls for 4 years.  Laura and Chris were married in 2001 – their daughter Lorien was born in 2003. Altogether, she has three daughters and five grandchildren. After directing the CC group for years, she is now pursuing a new path as a CC Support Manager and keeping books for Christ the King Presbyterian Church.
