Core Values
These are the principles or presuppositions that really matter to us in accomplishing our vision. When someone asks, what is important or distinctive about the Christ the King, these are the things we say.
God
We are committed to the reality that God is at Work for His own Glory. Our great hope is to be a God-centered church, captivated by God’s final pursuit – Himself.
The Bible
We are committed to the revelation of God’s truth as recorded for us in the Scriptures. The Bible is more than a guidebook; it is a living authority, shaping our preaching and teaching and making application to everyday life. The Bible shapes our theological identity.
The Gospel
We are committed to the Gospel as the engine for reaching, transforming and equipping God’s people. In a word, the Gospel brings true freedom. The Gospel’s message of grace — that sinners are forgiven and restored by God through the work of Jesus Christ — is not only that which brings us into relationship with God, but also that which leads us to grow to maturity. Grace frees us from the dual temptations of despair in failure and self-centered pride in success.
True and Vibrant Worship
We are committed to True and Vibrant Worship. Worship is at the core of our humanity. We were created to “glorify God and to enjoy Him forever.” Our tendency, however, is to look elsewhere for our joy and happiness. Christian worship exists to turn us away from the trivial and artificial objects of worship, which have captivated our hearts and return us to the person of true worship—The Living God.
The Church
We are committed to the Church — its People and Community — as the unique expression God’s “called out” ones to both a fellowship of the saints and a ministry agent in the world. The Christian faith is not something lived out in isolation but in the context of the Church. Christ the King will be both an organization of people and a living organism or community called the body of Christ. Read more about two practical expressions of this — Christian Education and Small Groups — on our Learn page.
Openness and Warmth
We are committed to Openness and Warmth. We are committed to emulating Jesus in our Manner as well as his Word. The church is for every kind of person from every kind of background. The church is meant to be an authentic and loving community both towards “insiders” and toward those who visit as “outsiders”. Therefore, everything we do must be done with humility, sensitivity and a listening ear to those who are not yet a part of us.
Deeds of Mercy
We are committed to “Deeds of Mercy”, not simply “Words of Truth.” We are committed to “showing” or embodying the reality of Kingdom life through a commitment to the all-encompassing nature of salvation. Read more on our Mercy Ministries page.
The Roanoke Valley
We are committed to The Valley and its Culture. Christ came to establish not simply a church, but a Kingdom. This Kingdom work is not to be against the city, nor is it to condone what the city does, but seeks to transform both city and culture. As “Kingdom Saints” we believe that it is our responsibility to winsomely and realistically engage Roanoke, Virginia – its beauty and its ugliness – all for the glory of Christ.
The Global Mission of the Church
We are committed to there being no sacred-secular dichotomy, to being a “Church Planting Church,” and to a Global Missions mindset. Read more on the Missions page.
